Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is EA and Respawn Entertainment's latest addition to the Star Wars universe, and one of the most important aspects of world building (or galaxy building) is the characters that fill it. To showcase the characters in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, EA has released a new video staring BD-1, the player character Cal Kestis' little droid buddy who will accompany the player on their quest throughout the galaxy.


The video shows off the creation of BD-1, along with testimonials from the game's designers and animators to describe how the developers brought the tiny droid to life. While the behind-the-scenes look at the making of the player's droid companion doesn't show any new gameplay footage, it does take a deep look into the making of what might be the best Star Wars game in EA's roster.



BD-1's function for Cal is both as a companion to communicate with, as well as the ultimate assistant for an explorer traveling through the remote locations that Fallen Order will take the player through. His size and ability to travel over all different terrains makes him the perfect match for Cal, even if that traversal feature is easily made obsolete by the charming way he travels on Cal's back in a similar way to how Luke carried Yoda in the swamps of Dagobah, which is one of many references Fallen Order makes to the original trilogy. The little droid also serves a number of functions like scanning the environment for clues and items to help Cal along the way and expand on the lore of the world.




Some of the finer technical aspects on display in the video include the design choices, such as the familiar droid beeping as well as the way his head and antenna move like an excited puppy. It's the little details that come together to make BD-1 more of a living being than a simple piece of hardware. As the designers explain in the video, droids in the Star Wars universe are fully-fledged characters, rather than set pieces, and their design focused on that mindset.


This behind-the-scenes look at the designing process for BD-1 is part of a larger series that will be showing off different parts of the game up until it releases on November 15th. With Fallen Order going gold recently and ready to ship, the studio's main focus is now on the launch day patch as well as promoting the game. These looks behind the curtain are a popular way to gain some familiarity with fans, and introducing the community to an adorable little droid is a fairly effective method that has worked for Star Wars franchises since R2-D2.
