The latest trailer for the upcoming live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie showed off the new design for Sega's blue mascot and it has undeniably received a far better reception than the original one. But while it as renewed some peoples' faith in the movie, others are still highly skeptical of Sonic's new look, including his own creator, Yuji Naka.

When the first trailer was released, Sonic's design was the biggest sticking point with audiences and was relentlessly mocked and described as being unnatural and creepy. In fact, when this design was initially leaked, Naka expressed his own unhappiness with it then via Twitter. This backlash led to the movie being delayed so Sonic's design could be completely revamped. However, despite this, Naka seems somewhat let down that they decided to change it and admitted that he still wanted to see a version of the movie with that original design. He once again took to Twitter to comment on this:

"Sonic’s new design for the movie is out. However, it seems they’re making it as if the old design didn’t exist, as the movie official account’s old tweets were deleted. I wanted to see a special DVD version of the movie which used the old design. Too bad."

He also can't seem to help but take slight umbrage with the new design too, commenting that, while it is more Sonic-like, the fact that his eyes aren't joined together is apparently a bit weird for him. However, Naka stated in the same Tweet that he is still looking forward to when the movie comes out.

"The design is much more Sonic-like now that he’s wearing gloves. However, his eyes still aren’t joined together, as expected. I can’t help but feel weird about that one point. But I’m looking forward to the movie’s release.”

In the wake of the new trailer, it was also revealed that Tyson Hesse, who was the animation director for Sonic Mania, had stepped in to help redesign Sonic for the movie, even claiming that this was the original look, which implies that it was changed to what we saw in the first trailer for unknown reasons.

While the film will feature series villain Dr. Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey), there will apparently be no appearances from any other characters, which has disappointed a number of fans. The series has become slightly notorious for its large cast, with many characters having been forgotten or abandoned over the years, but the lack of any major mainstays like Tails or Knuckles does seem like a bit of a misstep.

Sonic the Hedgehog will release in theatres on February 14th.
