Last week, after much anticipation, SNK fighter Terry Bogard was added to Smash. In a surprise Super Smash Bros. Ultimate presentation that mostly consisted of Sakurai giving a history lesson to fans about the Neo Geo and SNK fighting games, it was revealed that the Terry DLC character was available now.

Like the other 2D fighting game characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Terry is a combo based character whose move set mimics his moves in a Fatal Fury game. He is quick, can pack a punch, but doesn't have good recovery. That means its best to really do as much damage as possible in one combo when playing as Terry. However, really learning Terry is all knowing how and when to use his Special and Super Special Attacks.

Terry Bogard's Special Attacks are performed using a combination of standard Smash Bros. inputs and Street Fighter esque stick movements to combo them together. Each has two variants, tap the button for the weak version and and hold the button for a more powerful attack. In addition to these Special Attacks and inputs that can combo them together, Terry two Super Special Moves that he can only use once he’s at 100 percent damage. A “GO” symbol appears next to the character portrait to indicate when these are ready to use.

Neutral Special: Power Wave – Shoots an energy wave that sticks to the ground and travels over edges. If performed in the air the move changes to a Round Wave that has slightly different attributes including knockback.

Side Special: Burning Knuckle/ Crack Shoot – The forward special is Burning Knuckle (↓ ↘ → +) and the back special is (↓ ↙ ← +), relative to the direction Terry is facing. Holding the button will cause more damage for both these moves. Burning Knuckle does between 15-18 percent and launches Terry forward with a punch. Crack Shoot is an arcing kick that does roughly 3-4 percent damage but has good knockback.

Up Special: Rising Tackle – Terry shoots straight up with a spinning kick that has good damage and knockback, but this one will leave Terry vulnerable. The standard tap version causes 12 percent damage, while holding the button increases the damage output to 16 percent.

Down Special: Power Dunk – Terry jumps up diagonally in the air hitting the enemy with a punch a knee strike and then slams back down diagonally to the ground. This move can be comboed from normal attacks using the down special input  plus → ↓ ↘ + which increases damage and makes Terry intangible, meaning he won't get hit by any normal enemy attacks.

Super Special Move: Power Geyser – Terry punches the ground directly below him, causing a geyser that hits for 26 percent damage. Can’t be used in the air. (↓ ↙ ← ↙ → + attack/special or ↓ ← ↓ → + attack/special)

Super Special Move: Buster Wolf – Terry charges straight forward with an energy punch. If he hits the enemy it causes a massive explosion that can launch opponents.  Can’t be used in the air. (↓ ↘ → ↓ ↘ → + attack/special or ↓ → ↓ → + attack/special)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
