After going dark for two days, Fortnite is back with a brand new Chapter and a brand new Season. Chapter 2: Season 1 is one of the biggest updates the game has seen since its 2017 release, with a massive list of features including a new map, support-style items, new chests, new ways to gain XP, upgrade-able weapons, a more immersive world, and even new ways to interact with water.


Of all these features, one of the most game-changing additions in Fortnite's latest chapter is the overhaul of the title's water mechanics. Whereas previously water only slowed a player down, now they can swim, drive armed motorboats, and even fish. To help with latter, here's our guide to how to get a rod and start pulling weapons from the depths.



Finding a Rod


The newly-added fishing rod item is actually quite easy to find, having been added to floor loot, chests, or barrels near water. For an almost guaranteed chance of getting one, players should head to the Point of Interest Craggy Cliffs, where they can be found in abundance.


The fishing rod is an inventory item, and can be equipped. Obviously this is still a Battle Royale, and therefore players should be cautious about running around with their fishing rod equipped when there might be enemies in the area, even though those in Chapter 2's official trailer don't seem too worried about it.





Plumbing the Depths


Once players have found a rod, the next thing they need is somewhere to cast it. Any body of water will do, and many of the ponds and lakes on Fortnite's new map will have fishing rods nearby to make it easier for players to get started.


While beside a body of water, players can cast their line, throwing a float into the water, then pull it in when it splashes. This is done with the right-mouse button, or the Right Trigger if using a controller. As with similar mechanics in other games, timing is key, and waiting too long after the splash animation and sound will result in failure.


If a player gets the timing right, they'll be rewarded with a random item. This could be a fish, a rusted can, building materials, or even a high-tier weapon. The odds for the latter are low however, and players fresh from the Black Hole and looking to complete the challenge to fish a weapon should be prepared to cast more than a few times until they succeed.
