Prior to its launch, there were reports that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare would feature familiar faces like Captain Price and John "Soap" MacTavish in the campaign. However, anyone who has played through the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign will know that Soap is nowhere to be found. Even so, that doesn't mean that the character doesn't have some presence in the new game.

Before we can talk about why Soap doesn't appear in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and how he is still referenced in the game, we must caution that we will be delving into SPOILER territory. Specifically, we will be discussing the very end of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign, so those who have yet to finish it may want to turn back, unless they don't plan to play the campaign and are just curious about Soap.

At the very end of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign, Captain Price is given the opportunity to put together his own task force, dubbed 141. He goes over some of the people that he is considering for Task Force 141. The names include Kyle "Gaz" Garrick, Simon "Ghost" Riley, and of course, John "Soap" MacTavish.

Price explains that Soap is a sniper and demolitions expert. When asked why MacTavish goes by the name "Soap," Price doesn't answer, responding. "That's classified." Price's comments about Soap seem to suggest that he won't be as much of a rookie as he was in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which could be an interesting twist on his character if Infinity Ward decides to continue the story in a future Modern Warfare game.

Beyond this line about Soap in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ending, he is otherwise not found elsewhere in the game. Perhaps Soap will one day be added as a playable character in the multiplayer mode, though plans for that have yet to be announced.

In the meantime, it's unclear why the claim was made that Soap would be in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot, when that's clearly not the case. However, the in-universe reason is that Task Force 141 doesn't exist yet in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot. Maybe we'll learn more about this decision in the future, so fans should stay tuned.
