When the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer beta was live, fans in Russia noticed that they were unable to play it on PS4. It wasn't long after that when fans realized that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare had been removed from the Russian PlayStation Store entirely. Many assumed that this meant Call of Duty: Modern Warfare had been banned in Russia, and while that's not the case, it won't be sold on the PlayStation Store at all.

The official Call of Duty Russia Twitter account has confirmed that Sony made the call to not sell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on the Russian PlayStation Store. "We look forward to the release of the game in digital form for PC and Xbox on October 25," it said. It's unclear if physical copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PS4 will still be sold in Russia or not, but fans should find out come launch day.

The Russian government has been known to ban Call of Duty games in the past. For example, Russia banned Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 due to the No Russian mission, which had players commit mass murder against Russian civilians in an airport. The new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is expected to have some controversial content as well and that may have played into Sony's decision to keep the game off the Russian PlayStation Store.

A specific reason for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare not being sold on the Russian PlayStation Store hasn't been announced at the time of this writing. However, the general consensus seems to be that the game paints the White Helmets volunteer group (which operates primarily in Syria and Turkey) in a favorable light. The Russian government is opposed to the White Helmets and so it stands to reason that Sony may be afraid of upsetting Russia by selling this game on its PlayStation Store. However, that's just speculation and no official reason has been given.

While it's no doubt disappointing for PS4 players in Russia that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare won't be sold on the PlayStation Store, at least the game isn't being banned from the country entirely. How big of an impact this will have on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's sales in the region remains to be seen, however.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches on October 25 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
